What is a Workflow?

A workflow is a complete and documented process that work towards achieving a desired outcome.  For commercial bodies this may aim to include Return on Investment (ROI).

It involves people, skills, knowledge, equipment, and time. It may also include financial resources and training.

Imagine a workflow as a series of checklists, with each checklist designed to ensure that a stage in the process is completed correctly and can move along to the next checklist. When complete, the result is a tangible output of data such as a crop map for analysis and discussion, or an input such as a shape file going into machinery that will use the data.

A series of processes that can be compiled into a re-usable workflow becomes a powerful tool that improves efficiency, reduces mistakes and allows less skilled staff to be employed.

The route to return on investment (ROI) is a multipath that includes hardware and software decisions and actions. For each discipline or industry, this multipath is different. Good ROI is dependent on an efficient and repeatable workflow that can still be fine-tuned for improved performance.
